This study has demonstrated that there are herbal agents with antibacterial activity. Streptococci, was effectively killed by most of the plants tested. Using the tube dilution method, akapulko and yerba buena displayed inhibitory action against alpha hemolytic Streptococcus. Bayabas and Hexetidine showed inhibitory action against Alpha hemolytic Strep., S. aureus, and E. coli at varying concentrations. These four solutions were further tested at 2 min, 30 min, 90 min, 3 hours, and 4 hours. The results showed that the activity of Bayabas against the Alpha hemolytic Streptococci was more superior than that of akapulco and yerba buena. It was also displayed that Hexetidine's inhibitory action was better than that of bayabas using all three organisms. The commercial mouthwash had the greatest minimum inhibitory concentration among the tested solutions. The researchers thus conclude that, hexetidine is a more effective antimicrobial agent. However, the inhibitory action displayed by the tested herbal extracts cannot be ignored. The limitations of this study play a significant role in the acceptance of this conclusion. The researchers are convinced that further search for and study of indigeneous materials should be promoted. (Author)
The study aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of mouthwash from herbal preparation in comparison with hexetidine and placebo using in vitro and in vivo methods.
